13 Year Old Shelby Grebenc is One Good Egg
Shelby Grebenc is a young girl who lives on a farm with her family in Broomfield, Colorado. When she was 10 years old, her mom was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and her family was on the edge of losing their home. Instead of reacting with fear or by feeling sorry for herself, Shelby decided to take action.
Shelby had an idea about how to raise money to help her family keep their home. She asked her grandmother for a $1,000 loan to launch her own egg business! When she started off, she only had a few chickens, but after a lot of hard work and perseverance, she now she has over 150 chickens and sells over 500 dozen eggs per month!
She wakes up at 6:15 each morning to take care of the chickens and spends up to 2.5 hours a day caring for them. Beyond helping her family in their time of need, Shelby is the youngest person ever to be awarded an Animal Welfare Seal of Approval which means that she follows strict rules to treat her animals in a caring way.
Her business is doing well now and so is her family. Thanks, in part, to her efforts, they are no longer in jeopardy of losing their farm.
